Pokemon Go: How to choose what Tyrogue evolves into

Most of you will know that Tyrogue can evolve into either of Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan or Hitmontop. But did you know that in Pokemon Go you can actually choose which of these the small fighting-type evolves into? Here, we explain how.

The kicking Hitmonlee and punching Hitmonchan have been a part of the Pokemon franchise since the very beginning. Tyrogue and Hitmontop, on the other hand, were introduced in Gen 2.

The introduction of Johto saw numerous ‘pre-evolutions’ of popular Pokemon added, including Tyrogue. So, the Scuffle Pokemon can evolve into any of these three.

Attack, defense or stamina?

Which one of these it will evolve into isn’t random, though. It all depends on which stat of Tyrogue’s is the highest.

Species in Pokemon Go have three different types of individual value (IV) – attack, defense and stamina. These determine the potential of a given Pokemon but in the case of Tyrogue, also what it will evolve into.

This is based on which of these IVs is the highest. It will evolve into the following:

  • Attack highest – Hitmonlee
  • Defense highest – Hitmonchan
  • Stamina highest – Hitmontop

If it is a tie for the best stat, the evolution will be random between them.

This curiously doesn’t match their in-game stats, however. While Hitmonlee does have the best attack, it is Hitmonchop that has the best defense.

Meanwhile, Hitmonchan is in the middle of the two, boasting the second highest attack and defense. All three of them have the same stamina stats.

Which is the best of Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan and Hitmontop?

Firstly, we can rule all three of them out of being good gym defenders or good counters in Raid Battles. None of them have the bulk or movesets to be effective here.

Hitmonlee

There’s more of a discussion to have when it comes to GO Battle League, though. Hitmonlee, while having moves suited to the PvP format, just doesn’t have the bulk to be considered.

Hitmontop, like Tyrogue, was first seen in the Johto region…

Hitmontop

Hitmontop has a great Fast Move in Counter. It has 4 damage per turn, has excellent energy generation and even benefits from same type attack bonus (STAB).

It also has decent Charge Moves in Close Combat and Stone Edge. Gyro Ball is another move it is capable of but this is considered the worst of the three.

Hitmonchan is capable of electric, fire, fighting and ice-type Charge Moves…

Hitmonchan

Finally, Hitmonchan is another option you could consider. It is unique in that it has a variety of types it can use as Charge Moves.

In addition to the attack boosting Power-Up Punch, the Punching Pokemon has Fire Punch, Ice Punch and Thunder Punch in its arsenal.

Power-Up Punch is an excellent move to have and should made a priority. It is low damage but charges quickly and boosts Hitmonchan’s attack each time it’s used.

The aforementioned variety of punches all have the same damage dealt and energy generation of 55 and 40 respectively.
